The Semester That Was- Initiation

The First Semester at Bhubaneswar has drawn to a close and it was high time that we kept you readers updated on the semester that was. So here we start on the first of the series of threads.

The journey began on the 15^th of July, 2009 for the first year students with their orientation programme organised by the institute. A first time plan by the administration- actually to enable them buy some time ahead of the second phase of counselling- was no short of admirable for the guys. An opportunity to gain knowledge of industry trends and more importantly, an exquisite chance to get acquainted with their comrades.

The second year students joined them all in Bhubaneswar on the 20^th July 2009 and IIT Bhubaneswar got into full force of its operation in Bhubaneswar on 22^nd of July with its foundation day ceremony-a high placed affair-presided over by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Orissa himself. The event was a perfect starter-with the Director spelling out the plans and other dignitaries gracing the occasion with their august presence. The gravity of the event’s significance in their lives-the commemoration of their institute’s foundation day- sank into the hearts of the students and they walked out with a resolve to tread their path to the pinnacle of success. The night also witnessed the performance of Aruna Mohanty – eminent Odissi dancer –troupe enthralling the audience with their impressive show. What preceded the foundation day ceremony was an event of significance-the students going to the main campus for a tree plantation drive.

With a great start to their life at Bhubaneswar, the students were thoroughly ready looking up to their path ahead-to leave their footprints in the annals of history. What followed was a period of what could be tagged a lull - not in the heavy meaning of it though. There is no denying the fact not all things go the ideal way right from its beginning. The institute activities were off to a silent start with classes, followed by more classes and labs and not much scope for the extras, a college life needs to include - thanks to the slow paced work culture of the people concerned. No doubt exploring the new city kept the guys interested. That phase of stillness thankfully did not prolong with the setting up of facilities necessary for extracurricular and starting of the student societies. Time flew. Before the students realised, they were already two months into their stay at their haven and found themselves at the pressing end of mid-semester exams only to be thrown next into the comfort zone of their homes for Durga Pooja vacation. This line is indeed symbolic of how quickly and waywardly things progressed in that tenure.Or probably we failed to realise it was only a blessing in disguise as inferred from what ensued in the later part of the semester- a timeline bubbling with events, a true feast to the hunger of the enthusiastic guys and girls.

What's Cooking?

First up, extremely sorry about the delay in not having kept you all up to date with the many happenings at our college. But I guess you'd understand that we were all busy and involved in it all!

The first sem at BBS has passed. And whew! What a fun filled and hectic 4 months did we have?! And meanwhile, we've been cooking up something big. We have tried keeping it under cover all this while but that is no longer possible as the aroma has started spreading out and people all around are picking it up! Hold your breath and take a deep whiff! Aahh...

Come 2010, brace up to be knocked over. It's huge, and it's getting bigger by the minute. IIT Bhubaneswar proudly presents -----> The first inter collegiate extravaganza. Yes, we are about to take out our first Big Step. From the biggest brand in Odisha, be assured that you are going to witness the biggest Festival of this part of the country! Hold no bars for your imaginations and let them run amok, for this is going to surpass them all. Keep watching this space from time to time to know about our latest updates! And meanwhile, do gear up and shed your inhibitions as you are all invited!

Wheels in Motion

Finally! After 45 days of college, IIT Bhubaneswar has finally started taking shape as one. Over the past month and half, some of the innovative minds of the insti fine tuned and have finally presented a vision of the non academic and cultural life here. Cheers to them all!

Since its inception, IIT Bhubaneswar has had quite a see saw ride. On one hand, we have the freshers who have come to experience something new with a few visions of their own. On the other, we have the second years who have had a hard time leaving IIT Kharagpur after having had a blast there for a year. It has taken us all a long time to get acquainted to IIT Bhubaneswar in Bhubaneswar. Now there's no looking back. Onward we march, with dreams, hopes and visions.

Sorry for getting sidetracked guys, been some time since I updated this blog and got carried away at it. The point of this post is the announcing of the beginning of the cultural life. Today, Sep 4th, 6 student societies have started functioning. The students were given a presentation about each society individually by concerned students in the General Seminar slot. They are :

• Dance Society
• Robotics
• Music Society
• Dramatics Society
• Literary Society

The purpose of each society is self explanatory.

Now that the wheels have been set in motion, let us gear up for whatever the journey throws up against us. It is guaranteed to be a fun filled and tumultuous ride. Sit back and enjoy!

Brand Identity of IIT BBS Revealed

First of all we apologise for not updating the blog.Now we are back and will update everything that has happened in IIT BBS from the first day.

The logo of IIT Bhubaneswar has been finalised.It is designed by National Institute of Design,Ahmedabad.

Symbolism:

The logo primarily represents the holistic philosophy of IIT Bhubaneswar.

The two surrounding semi circle form the environment and ambit of IIT Bhubaneswar,while the open book inside represents knowledge and source of wisdom.The symmetric petals are symbolic of freshness and inspire growth for infinite knowledge.

Clarifications

The Orientation Programme is compulsory for all to attend.Only on production of an application with valid reason may the student be exempted from attending the same.

Also the tests mentioned in the medical form are required.And so are the vaccinations i.e. it is compulsory to have those vaccines failing which will lead you to be “Provisionally Admitted”

Bhubaneswar is well connected by Airways and Railways.And i guess most of you would have booked your tickets by now.Anyways considering feasibility and demand we are going have help desks and bus services in the Railway Station only.

Help Desk Dates:15th,16th,19th,20th,21st,22nd July 2009

Tentative Timings: 0300 hrs to 2100 hrs

IIT Bhubaneswar officials will be there to help you out and ferry you off to the hostel.On reaching the hostels kindly go to the Hostel office(tentatively at Balmiki-2 Flat No.-103) and submit your filled Hostel Proforma and complete the necessary procedure and take over your keys to your room.Feel free to ask any queries to any of the officials and student representatives.

In case you arrive at an odd time, when there is no help desk no need to panic.Follow the instructions below:

For Railway Station: You may go to the auto stand or the taxi stand and ask them to take you to the hostel address.Don't pay more than Rs 50-70 for autos and Rs100-150 for taxi(bargain for better deals).Though i would recommend autos they are easily available quick and competitive.

For Airport: There is a good enough taxi stand there with a taxi union having fixed rates/prepaid taxi service to drop off at any location in Bhubaneswar.

We will try to inform the taxi and auto unions of the IIT Bhubaneswar hostel still write down the following address of the hostel in a piece of paper accurately.

For 1st Year Registration on 16th July 2009

1. Following documents are needed to bring by the students at the time of Registration.

a. Offer Letter

b. JEE Admit card

c. Money Receipt for the deposit of Rs.15,000/-for General and Rs.8,000/-for SC/ST/PD made on the day of counseling.

d. Educational Certificates(10^th/10+2)

e. Bio data Form (completed Annexure-1)

f. 6 copies of stamp size photographs

g. Guardian ‘s Undertaking and Students’ Undertaking Form (Annexure-II)

h. Medical Certificates (Annexure-III)

i. Demand draft favouring “IIT Bhubaneswar “ payable at Bhubaneswar

j. Completed payment slip

NB:Please note that not bringing any of the above documents would lead to provisional admission.So,better be and safe side and bring everything more than whats asked for..

For 2nd Year Registration on 20th July 2009

For the Registration Process of 2^nd Year Students:

a. Completed Payment Slip

b. Demand draft favouring “IIT Bhubaneswar” payable at Bhubaneswar

In addition to all these you also need to bring the hostel proforma uploaded on the notice board section of the website www.iitbbs.ac.in and submit it in the Hostel Office at the time of Check-in.

Seeing that you guys are having a lot of queries about counselling, here are a few things that I hope will clear your doubts!

Counselling

Date of Reporting : July 15th, Wednesday

Date of Admission/Submission of fees : July 16th, Thursday

Time : 0900 Hrs

Venue : IIT Bhubaneswar

Samantapuri (Behind Swosti Plaza)

Bhubaneswar - 751013

An amount of Rs.14,700/- (Rs.7,800/- for SC/ST) from out of the amount of Rs.15,000/- (Rs.8,000.00 for SC/ST) paid at the time of counseling is adjustable against the total payable fees of Rs.52650.00 (Rs.27650.00 for SC/ST). (Net amount payable – Rs.37,950/- for General and Rs.19,850/- for SC/ST).

Fees will have to be deposited through a bank draft drawn on any bank payable at Bhubaneswar. Demand Draft to be drawn in favour of “IIT Bhubaneswar. Please write your name and rank on the back of the draft.

Please bring the money receipt for the deposit of Rs.15,000/- (Rs.8,000/- for SC/ST) made on the day of counseling ( irrespective of the Institute where the deposit has been made)

And well, in case you haven't received a call letter, you might want to know that you are supposed to bring a blood group certificate from an authorized hospital and 6 stamp size photographs.

That was primitive. Now about your Accommodation.

We will be staying at SBI Colony, Devashram, Keshura, Bhubaneswar. 52 apartments have been taken on lease. It is located about 7-9 kms from the Institute. Buses will ply to and fro from the Institute to the place of residence.

First years will be allotted flats starting from 0700 Hrs on the 15th of July. The flats are 3 BHDK flats. That means a lot of space. 6 students per flat (tentative). Accommodation for parents WILL NOT be provided. But I guess, they can squeeze into flats along with you!

What else?

I guess it is common knowledge that you are allowed cell phones, laptops and any other gizmo you care about. I have heard a few queries about what to bring here? Its all up to you guys/gals to decide. I would suggest you wait. There is your first break, beginning on 23rd Sep (tentative). So, you come here, stay for a couple months and when you go back home load yourself with whatever you might need and return! And no, I don't think you will be allowed furnish your bedroom with your own furniture. I got a query about that as well! You will be provided a cot, a table, a chair and a cupboard! That's all you will need I suppose. Unless, you are Queen/King of England!

Food?

You will be having working lunch and snacks.Breakfast and Dinner will be given in the hostel.Menu will be basically a mixture of North Indian and South Indian stuff. A canteen is being setup. And well, they don't serve Italian/Chinese in mess. This was a query that my senior was telling me about! LOL!

Classes?

What's the hurry people? Orientation will go on until 22nd, which is the date of second round of registration. Your classes will begin on 23rd July.

What books should I bring?

Wrong person, wrong question! Period.

Miscellaneous

RAGGING IN ANY FORM IS BANNED!

Smoking in public places is prohibited! Please note the public places part. Liquor, however is completely prohibited.

IIT Bhubaneswar Hostel Updates

The hostel shall be open for occupying from 15th July 2009 from 0700 hrs IST.Mess would start from that day as also will the canteen.Parents are not going to be provided with separate rooms but they can very well put up with their wards in their rooms.Their is enough space in the flats.Else there are a lot of hotels of all ranges in Bhubaneswar,you can easily get a room.

Six students are going to be allotted per flat having 3 bedrooms,1 drawing,1 dining, 2 toilets,1 kitchen each.In some cases 7 students may be allotted per flat.

Amenities in the Hostel:

Each flat is being provided with 3 cupboards and Aquaguard including the one table, chair and bed per student.There will be Common Utility Flats having television,water coolers and TT tables.A gym is being setup too details of which will be known when you come here.A Doctor’s chamber having a visiting doctor and first aid & emergency kits will also be in place.

Welcome to IIT Bhubaneswar

The results of JEE counselling are out and IIT Bhubaneswar is about to get 120 new entrants. I remember the time when I had appeared for the counselling the previous year. I was under a lot of confusion, a not so great JEE AIR, but options open left and right in BITSAT and AIEEE counselling. On Jun 30, the verdict was - E11 (Electrical Engineering, IIT Bhubaneswar).

I spent the next week, trying to dig up stuff about IIT BBS, as I was about to be part of its first batch. Unsurprisingly, there wasn't much available on the net or anywhere for that matter. On July 23rd, I registered myself as a student of IIT BBS. And ever since then, there has been no looking back.

One year since..

I must admit, I did have my misgivings when I took up IIT Bhubaneswar. But, it was like a challenge where the odds were stacked against you, though only slightly. It was an enjoyable and a definitely memorable first year. I can count more highs than lows in it. One of the best and the worst part was, living in the huge Kharagpur campus. That enabled us to enjoy the highly hyped 'Campus Life', and mind you, it is worth all that hype! And it is also the worst part, coz we were to let go of it after just a year! But again, new challenges await. IIT BBS is all set to kick off from Bhubaneswar come July 2009!

If you are a BBS fresher, shake off whatever misgivings you may have, put a broad grin on your face and join the bandwagon

Well its counseling time again and as we gear up to welcome our 2nd batch....all the students and parents must be too worried about the pros cons of new IITs.We had too faced the same speculation last summer and so thought it would be a good idea to help ya all guys out in any doubts u have!!

Folks believe us its not that bad just u have to change ur mindset a bit but after all its an IIT.....and u will too get the best of treatment....

The new Home of the BBSR IITians

Well IIT Bhubaneswar will start functioning its classes from the IIT Kharagpur extension campus in Bhubaneswar this July...

The students are to be housed in apartments of SBI colony in Keshura,Bhubaneswar which seems one of the best of Bhubaneswar except the fact that it is almost 10kms from the extension centre.
Each block has 4 floors and each of the flat has 3 bedrooms,2 toilets,1 dining,1 drawing...IIT Bhubaneswar has supposedly hired 50 flats for its students and faculty.

With the concept of Working Lunch and we IITians spending half of their time in hostel and half in the Extension Campus with a substantial time on bus for transit...we hope everything turns up smoothly as per the plan of the authorities.

IIT BHUBANESWAR-An insight into its permanent location

IIT Bhubaneswar, the first among the 6 new IITs opened is gonna come up in Argul, roughly 20-30 kms from Bhubaneswar main city...Location is ultimate with the land being situated on the foothills of a hill on which the presiding deity of the area Barunei resides...

IIT BBSR Latest News!!

Well guys catch on this latest piece of news...

Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh likely to lays foundation stone of IIT-Bhubaneswar on Feb. 11. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting presided over by Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh on Wednesday.
Prof Madusudan Chakrabarti will be appointed as the chief of the IIT, Bhubaneswar. Prof Chakrabarti is currently working as Deputy Director in IIT, Khargpur. He is a Professor in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. He is also a Life Member of the Indian Institute of Metals and Materials Research Society of India
Earlier, a site selection committee, headed by an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resource Development Ashok Thakur, had visted the State and selected Argul for location of the IIT. The State Government will immediately make available of 500 acres of the land for constructions of the IIT.

My First Post

Hey folks,this being my first post here, I feel I would do good to keep it short.

Foremost, Pradosh-man,u hav done a pretty gud thing by starting this blog(and moreso coz i have been given an avenue to write as well).

With the ulti gala time of our KGP life impending in near future-we need to,besides enjoying ourself(which ofcus needs no intimation for us), also need to carefully take a note of all the events and the intricacies of it both from the front and behind the scenes. 

There is no denying the fact that IIT-Bbsr ought to organize its fests and it is just that we need to mould the plausibilty and feasibility factors in the determining equation in favour of us and WE shall organize our own fests in the immediate future,tho it m8 sound a herculean task on the outset.

Wil keep posting in the days to come and mates, do keep commenting and keep the thread going.

IIT Bhubaneswar students experience Inter IIT in 1st year!!

Some of our fellow IIT BBSR friends got an opportunity of their lifetime this December by going for the Inter IIT Sports Meet held from December 11-17,2008 in IIT Madras..
